Less than 50% of high school students have completed basic Cal State University requirements. Equality in our education is essential, because all kids deserve an equal chance. Throwing taxpayer money at under performing schools without clear accountability is not a good use of taxpayer money. We must look deeper into the causes of poor performance especially in schools having a higher percent of ethnic students. There are many reasons that students don’t perform well and one such example is that the parents don’t speak English but yet the students are coming home (if they have a home) and asking their parents for help but the homework is in English as opposed to their spoken language.
These are issues we must tackle and come up with a solution so all students have equal support in their education. The problems are many and the solutions oftentimes are few. We must do better, these students are our future leaders.
Although alternative educational pathways is not related to equality, not all students want a CSU education. We need to strongly consider bringing in a higher program of CTE in all schools. These trades are critical to our society and just as important as a four year degree in a CSU system.
